IIHF is the governing body of international ice hockey and inline hockey and having 77 member associations. IIHF controls the international rulebook, process international player transfers, dictate officiating guidelines and runs various development programs to bring hockey to broader population of fans. It develops world championships at all levels men, women and juniors under 20 and under 18 each year.

This year IIHF have organized 2017 IIHF ice hockey championship to which Germany and France are hosting together. It is very first time happened that two nations are hosting ice hockey championship.

In 2017 IIHF ice hockey championship 16 nations will participate in two groups A and B for the preliminary rounds. In total these 16 teams will play 64 games. This ice hockey world championship is going to help 3rd time in Cologne and 2nd time in Paris.

According to tournament pattern, Top 4 ranked teams of the preliminary matches of each group will play for the quarter finals that will be played cross over with the pattern of 1A-4B, 2A- 3B, 1B-4A and 2B-3A means the fourth ranked team will play with first ranked team of other group and second ranked team will play third ranked team of other group. The winning teams of quarterfinals will advance to semi finals.

The winning teams of semi finals will play gold medal game and the losing teams will play for bronze.

The 64 games of the tournament are scheduled to be played from 5th May to 21st May in 2017 at Lanxess Arena of Cologne and Accor Hotels arena in Paris. Both semi finals will be played at Lanxess arena.
